The Sony Ericsson W580i is a slide opening Walkman music phone which comes with built in EDGE and Bluetooth technologies that provides high speed data transfers and wireless connectivity. With external navigation and music controls, user can access the menu system even though the handset is closed. The phone comes in two different colours, an urban grey coloured casing which comes complete with turquoise coloured keys or white coloured casing which comes with bright orange coloured keys.

The Sony Ericsson W580i measures at 99mm in height, 47mm in width, 14mm in depth and 94g in weight. The display measures at 2.0-inches featuring a TFT 262k colour screen resolution of 240-by-320-pixels for the user to view. The W580i comes with a 12MB of internal memory plus a Memory Stick Micro M2 for further expansion of storage capabilities. It also works on quad-band technology GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) networks, supports Bluetooth connectivity and Bluetooth stereo A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), USB 2.0 connectivity, EDGE technology for data transfer (Class 10, 236.8 kbps), and a built in assisted GPRS (Class 10 (4+1/3+2 slots), 32 - 48 kbps) system. The phone supports audio format such as MP3, MP4, AAC, AAC+ and e-AAC. The device is also equipped with a 2-megapixels digital camera with 4x digital zoom, video recorder, video player and video streaming, video clip and picture blogging features, Macromedia Flash Lite and SVG Tiny 1.1. It also has a built in FM radio with RDS (RDS feature allows user to gain text information which is displayed on the screen provided by the radio station which includes information on the song being played). Its main feature is the built in Walkman music player with useful music focused features including a TrackID music recognition feature, PlayNow quick access ringtone feature, MusicDJ melody composer feature, Mega Bass equaliser and with the help from Bluetooth stereo (A2DP) which transmits quality stereo music from the W580i to the stereo headset. The Sony Ericsson W580i comes with Access NetFront internet browser with RSS feeds which allows the user to enjoy a mobile Internet service. The user can browse the internet and manage their email service from the mobile handset and also connect the device to their personal computer for exchanging music or photo files between devices using a drag and drop method. The W580i also comes with text and multimedia messaging (services like email, SMS (Text Messaging) and SMS long, MMS (multimedia messaging), text prediction system T9 technology), sound recorder, speakerphone and personal organizer applications (Alarm Clock, Calculator, Calendar, Phone Book, Stopwatch, Notes, Tasks, Timer, Flight Mode, Business Card Exchange, Personal Trainer, Conference Calls and Vibrating alert). The device uses a standard Li-Polymer 930 mAh (BST-38) battery. Its talk time is rated up to 9 hours, while the standby time is up to 370 hours.
